Why Does Your Dog Need a Raincoat? A Guide to Rainy-Day Adventures

Rainy walks don’t have to mean wet fur, muddy messes and heading straight for the bath.

Dogs love exploring whatever the weather. A little rain rarely stops them from running through grass, following new scents or heading off the path. But after the adventure comes the less exciting part: soaked fur, mud, drying time and a very messy trip home.

That’s where a well-designed dog raincoat can make a difference.

At Pawé Lab, we wanted to create rainwear that provides protection from wet weather without getting in the way of the reason you went outside in the first place — to explore together.

Raincoat vs. No Raincoat: What’s the Difference?

Without a Raincoat

There’s something undeniably happy about a dog running around completely soaked. But wet adventures can also mean water and mud reaching the coat, belly and body.

For dogs with longer or thicker coats, that can mean more time spent drying and cleaning after every rainy adventure. Wet fur can also bring dirt and moisture straight into the car or home.

A raincoat creates a protective outer layer between your dog and the weather, helping keep more of their body clean and dry.

With a Raincoat

The difference is simple: less weather on your dog, more freedom to enjoy the outdoors.

A good raincoat shouldn't feel like something your dog has to work around. It should move with them.

That's why our raincoat is designed for active dogs — whether they're walking along Melbourne's wet streets, running through grass or exploring a trail.

The coverage helps protect the body from rain and splashes while leaving dogs free to walk, sniff, climb and run naturally.

Made for Movement, Not Just Rain

Protection from rain was only one part of our design process.

We also wanted a raincoat that made sense for dogs who actually move.

Running, jumping and exploring require flexibility, so the design is intended to provide coverage without unnecessarily restricting natural movement. The leg construction gives dogs space to move, while the lightweight construction avoids the bulky feeling of heavier outerwear.

And when the weather changes halfway through an adventure, breathability matters too.

What’s Inside the Pawé Lab Raincoat?

Pawé Lab three-layer raincoat material construction

Rather than relying on a single piece of fabric, our raincoat uses a three-layer construction, with each layer serving a different purpose.

Layer 1 — Yunjin Plaid 100% Polyester

The face fabric forms the raincoat's first line of protection. It's lightweight, durable and water-resistant, helping water bead on the outer surface rather than immediately reaching your dog's coat.

Layer 2 — 3-in-1 TPU Microporous Hydrophilic Film

Hidden beneath the outer fabric is the functional layer.

This TPU membrane provides waterproof protection while remaining breathable, helping manage moisture inside the raincoat during active walks and runs.

Layer 3 — Kettech Mesh 3D Spacer Composite

The layer closest to your dog uses a soft 3D spacer mesh.

Its open structure helps keep air circulating while adding structure and comfort between your dog and the protective outer layers.

Together, the three layers balance weather protection, breathability and comfort — especially important when your dog isn't simply walking, but running and exploring.

So, Does Every Dog Need a Raincoat?

Not necessarily.

Some dogs naturally handle wet weather better than others, and for a quick walk in light rain, a raincoat may not always be necessary.

But for dogs who love longer outdoor adventures — particularly dogs with coats that become soaked, dirty or difficult to dry — a raincoat can make wet-weather walks much easier for both dog and owner.

For us, it's not about keeping dogs perfectly clean.

It's about letting them run through wet grass, explore after the rain and enjoy being dogs, while making the journey home a little easier.

Because bad weather shouldn't automatically mean staying inside.
